Why did you choose to become a teacher?
Eighteen years ago, after a year of procrastination and frustration, my parents suggested I train as an Art teacher. It was the best advice I ever got.
I’m able to combine my love of the creative process with the satisfaction of passing on my skills and fostering a love of Art in my students.
What makes a good teacher?
Compassion, patience and a good sense of humour.
What has been a highlight of your art teaching career?
My wife and I taught at Shanghai United International School for two years in 2010. I turned around a failing Art department and, in the process, secured some outstanding IGCSE Art results!
What inspires you about teaching art?
My students. Seeing their skills develop along with their confidence in their own creative process.
What do you most like about ACG Sunderland?
It’s a very supportive environment here, with motivated, lovely children. We can teach to our strengths without getting bogged down dealing with negative behaviour.
Any initiatives you’d like to share?
Promoting visual art and design around the school, whether through art clubs or creating House flags for sports events. I’m also very proud of the amazing work I get to highlight through my ‘Mrdeezartclass’ Instagram account, and hope it can inspire future generations of artists and art students.
What is something we might not know about you?
I have an artist ‘persona’, Stensolo, under which I do a lot of my own painting and design work. Check-out www.stensolo.com.
