ACG Sunderland华语家长群

A WeChat group for Chinese families at ACG Sunderland has grown to more than 80 members since it started in 2017 as a tool to connect the school’s Chinese community.

The group was initiated by Wendy Qu, mother of Lucy in Year 13 and Loui in Year 9. Wendy saw the need for good communication among Chinese families in the school community.

With regular updates in Mandarin on gatherings, events for students, adults and family and most importantly information relevant to education and living in NZ, the group provides valuable information for current and prospective international families.

“Very often, parents who are new to the school are quite lost in terms of getting around Auckland and what to do if they need help,” explained ACG Sunderland International Dean Michelle Ngoh.

“The group provides opportunities for them to ask questions and for group members to share their personal experience. Information is disseminated very quickly through WeChat and parents are kept informed about what is going on.”

For ACG Sunderland’s close-knit Chinese parents, there are many benefits to being connected, Ms Ngoh said. Assistance when language is a barrier; emotional and mental support for those who are new to New Zealand; and an opportunity to share their experiences, as well as any issues and ideas about their children’s education.

“The main issue for most families is learning a new language. This way, when I need to see a parent, I am able to connect very easily and have a channel to disseminate useful information about living and learning in NZ, Auckland events, and extra support outside school.”

ACG Sunderland华语家长群 is one of a range of support channels for international families. Others include:

  • A dedicated dean for international students
  • Caring homestay options
  • Top-quality English language teaching
  • Ongoing support for international students throughout the year
